Committee on Climate Change
The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) is an independent non-departmental body, set up to advise the UK Government on its response to climate change, and in particular the achievement of the UK’s carbon budgets. The Labour Government, as part of the decision to allow a third runway at Heathrow, asked the CCC to report on whether aviation can achieve its target of reducing emissions to 2005 levels by 2050 and if not how this could be achieved.
The CCC concluded that the combination of different policies (e.g. tax and capacity plans) should be designed to limit total demand increase to a maximum of around 60% of current passenger numbers, until and unless technological developments suggest that any higher figure would be compatible with the emissions target.
AOA and its members support the conclusions of the report. We welcome the Committee’s belief that aviation can grow within a carbon constrained world. We believe that the aviation industry can meet, and beat the 60% growth limit through innovation and technology. We welcome the challenge.- Related Topics
