Low Carbon Transport to Airports

In February 2010 AOA and DfT jointly hosted an event to examine surface access to major UK airports, as part of the Department’s International Networks Improvement Programme. The aim was to look at the improvements made at airports since 2005, to identify bottlenecks and areas where Government could act to increase the uptake of public transport to airports, and to allow airports to share best practise.

The day provided a useful opportunity for some airports to highlight common issues to DfT, and to engage with other stakeholders to identify and discuss opportunities to improve public transport to airports. AOA is working closely with DfT to take the results of the forum forward, and hold a similar event in the autumn.

AOA is currently working alongside representatives from a number of airports to lobby the Government to allow airport operators to decriminalise their terminal forecourts and implement civil sanctions, similar to the powers used by local councils in city centres.

AOA argues that this will improve safety and security and reduce emissions and congestion. AOA has written to the Secretary of State for Transport urging him to consider this matter. We currently await his response.
