The AOA warmly welcomed the UK Government’s White Paper commitment to progressing the inclusion of aviation in a Europe-wide emissions trading scheme. It marked the success of a persuasive campaign by the AOA and the airport sector to convince the Government that emissions trading in aviation is a “smart” tool for achieving change.

Committee Chairman Peter Willis opened the sixth AOA Operations and Safety Conference with the twin observations that while UK aviation had largely recovered from 9/11 in terms of traffic volume – with the low-cost carriers serving as the industry’s “accelerator pedal” – airports are increasingly being asked to deliver “more for less”.

“Denver has one, but only a little one. It can only handle up to the 737,” said Gatwick Managing Director Roger Cato. The £15 million bridge, which will link the new £100 million Pier 6 with the North Terminal, is only the second in the world to span a live taxiway and, as Cato proudly asserts, it is by far the biggest, measuring 197m in length and 32m in height, giving it the capacity to handle the 747.
