| The strategy formerly known as CASS – the Civil Aviation Sustainability Strategy – has really taken shape in the last month or two, in ways that have made it immeasurably stronger. The most significant change has been the adoption of a new name – Sustainable Aviation – which will serve to identify the strategy in the eyes of policy makers, signatory companies, and the public. |

| The aviation industry knows all about pressure groups campaigning to prevent infrastructure developments. For once, a powerful group is calling for (italics) the urgent construction of a new runway and terminal. Future Heathrow, launched on 23 May, is led by Clive Soley, previously a West London MP for 26 years. He explained the group’s rationale to John Frank-Keyes. |

For the last few months, something interesting has been going on in a hitherto rather quiet corner of the AOA membership – Glasgow Prestwick airport. I had been receiving strange e-mails of saucy, kilt-related humour, and press releases daubed in purple. Most intriguing was my invitation Boarding Card, requesting my presence at a grand launch of the ‘new’ Glasgow Prestwick, on 19 May. |

| In March, BAA published a document entitled ‘Gatwick Airport Outline Master Plan – Draft for Consultation’, which foresees how the airport could develop over the next 10 and 25 years. Local communities, businesses, councils and MPs were invited to contribute comments and the resulting feedback was comprehensive but did not contain many surprises, according to Paul Griffiths, BAA Gatwick managing director. |

| On 26 May, Liverpool beat AC Milan to win their fifth European Cup (now known as the UEFA Champions League), reinforcing the club’s status as the most successful in British history. The airport was also a winner that week, smoothly handling 10,000 departing and returning fans in what became known as ‘Operation Turkish Delight’. Ross Falconer (a Liverpool fanatic) reports. |

Without a functioning runway, an airport is just a shopping centre. Obvious? Yes – but when you think it through, it is entirely possible that the most valuable pieces of real estate in West London are Heathrow’s runways. Alex Lake, airports director of architects and engineering consultants, Burks Green explains the importance of runway maintenance planning.

Paul Kehoe, AOA Chairman, stated in 2004: “Airports’ next major task is to remove the ‘assault course’ element of passenger handling.” One such component is the terminal’s visual environment. |
