ENVIRONMENT SPECIALIST CONFERENCE

23 April 2013

The AOA’s 2013 Environment Specialist Conference took place in April, when the Heathrow Academy kindly hosted a discussion of environment issues. Last year, Sustainable Aviation (SA) – the alliance of airports, airlines, aircraft and engine manufacturers and air traffic service providers, of which the AOA is a key player – published a Carbon Road-Map, showing how aviation could grow to 2050 without any significant increase in emissions; and so the 2012 Environment conference focused on carbon.

This year, SA is focusing on its Noise Road-Map (launched on 23 April); and so the 2013 Environment Conference majored very much on the issue of how our sector can grow whilst also dealing with noise made from aviation operations.

Dr Andy Jefferson (SA), Kevin Morris (of aerospace trade association ADS), and Keith Bushell (Airbus) spoke about various aspects of the SA Noise Road-Map, and how technology and newer future aircraft fleets will deliver quieter flying. Nigel Milton (Heathrow) discussed noise and community issues, the importance of engagement, and the need to establish noise metrics which everyone can trust. John Bottomley (Manchester Airports Group) explored the effect local authority land use planning policies were having on the ability to reduce the numbers of people affected by noise around airports; and the need for a stronger approach to stop building new residential schemes close to airports. Timothy Gill (NATS) explained flight profiling, and how better operational measures can improve both noise and carbon due to generally enhanced efficiency.
